Why You’ll Love this Recipe

  • Perfectly sweet – With only 1/3 cup of added sugar, the natural sugar in the apples makes this bread sweet but not too sweet.
  • One bowl – Minimize the mess with just one bowl prep for this recipe.
  • Wholesome ingredients – You probably already have all of the ingredients needed for this recipe in your pantry. No special trip to the grocery store is required.

Ingredients

  • Fresh apples – I prefer fresh Honeycrisp apples, but any sweet & tart variety will work.  Granny Smith and pink lady apples are both great options. Frozen diced apples work too, just make sure they don’t have peels.
  • Unsweetened applesauce – Opt for an unsweetened variety to keep refined sugar to a minimum.
  • Flour – I use all-purpose flour, but I have made this recipe with gluten-free flour with great results. You could also try whole wheat flour if you prefer.
  • Sugar* – I use white granulated sugar for this recipe. Swap up to half of the amount of sugar for brown sugar for more fall flavors.
  • Salt – Just a pinch is needed for this recipe. But honestly, I have accidentally forgotten it when making this once before and I couldn’t tell the difference.
  • Avocado oil – Any neutral oil will work (canola oil, vegetable oil, etc.). Swap for melted vegan butter or melted coconut oil if you prefer.
  • Vanilla Extract – Helps to round out the flavors.
  • Baking essentials – Baking powder, soda, salt.
  • Ground cinnamon – I like extra cinnamon in this recipe. Adjust to your liking! Add more warm spices like nutmeg or cloves for more fall season flavors.

How to Make Vegan Apple Bread

This is a detailed step-by-step guide on how to make this recipe, including photographs. For the quick version, skip ahead to the recipe card below!

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and use a dab of canola oil on a paper towel to grease and 9” x 5” loaf pan. I use a glass loaf pan, but you can use metal as well.

Wash and peel a large apple, then dice it to the desired size. I like very small pieces in my bread, but you could go as large as you’d like.

Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, toss in the peeled and diced apple pieces, applesauce, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix to combine.

If you are using frozen diced apples, make sure to thaw them before this step.

Add the Dry ingredients

Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar, and mix until a batter has formed. The batter will be quite wet and very thick. If the batter is too dry and you still have streaks of flour after mixing, add a splash or two of water and mix again until you have a cohesive dough (pictured below).

Time to Bake

Pour the apple bread batter into a lightly oiled 9” x 5” baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the loaf comes out clean.

  • Buy apples when they are in season and peel, dice, and freeze them for up to 6 months. This recipe works great with frozen apples too.
