Who doesn’t love a good sweet potato fry? These Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries are done in 20 minutes with just 4 ingredients. It doesn’t get any easier. I love the texture and taste of air frying veggies so much better than deep frying. Bonus that air frying is healthier, too! These sweet potato fries are a great option for when you want something different than traditional French fries.
These crispy sweet potato fries make a great side dish or snack. I am lucky in the fact that my toddler will eat anything if I call it fries (hello Zucchini Fries and Carrot Fries)!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Quick – These fries are super quick and easy, you can make them any day of the week for a snack or side dish.
- Customizable – This recipe keeps it simple with just salt and pepper, but you could easily add more spices like garlic powder, paprika – whatever you like.
- Perfect texture – No one likes a soggy fry. These come out perfectly crispy every time using the air fryer.
- Simple ingredients – It doesn’t get easier than this! Just potatoes, spices, and a small amount of oil is all you need to make these homemade sweet potato fries. Everything can easily be found in a grocery store.

Ingredients
- Sweet potatoes – I like to choose large sweet potatoes, but it’s all about how you slice ’em. This recipe would work with regular white potatoes as well, but cooking times would change.
- Olive oil or Avocado oil – Any oil works fine for getting the spices to stick to the potatoes. This recipe uses just a bit of oil, but if you prefer even less oil, just sprinkle a bit of water over the slices before adding the salt and pepper to get it to stick.
- Salt & black pepper – I kept it simple here because I think sweet potatoes have great flavor on their own, but feel free to spice it up! Chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, or onion powder would all be delicious with these fries.Â
Helpful Equipment
In addition to measuring cups and spoons, the following equipment is helpful for this recipe:
- Ninja Foodi Air Fryer – I am not sponsored by Ninja in any way, but I LOVE this thing. It is the best air fryer out there in my opinion. I especially love the two baskets to be able to prep two different items at the same time. Must have for anyone with toddlers.Â
- Air Fryer Baset liners (optional)
- Chef’s knife
- Potato peeler
- Cutting board
- Large bowl
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
This is a detailed step-by-step guide on how to make this recipe including photographs. For the quick version, skip ahead to the recipe card below!
Start by washing and peeling the sweet potatoes. I prefer to fully peel my sweet potatoes to start. You can absolutely leave some or all of the skin on if that is what you prefer.
Once the potatoes are peeled, cut the potato into layers length-wise, then cut those layers into fry-shaped segments (shown below). You can opt to cut into thicker segments or sweet potato wedges, whatever you like. Just monitor the cook time closely for smaller slices. The smaller the slices, the less time they will take to cook.

Once you have your fries sliced, toss them into a large bowl, and coat in olive oil, pepper, and salt, and give them a little shake. Feel free to mix it up in the spice department.
Tip: For Oil-free, omit the oil and sprinkle 1-2 tsp water on the fries before coating with the spices to ensure the spices stick.

Place the potatoes into the air fryer. For best results, keep the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Overcrowding the basket may lead to soggy fries and increased cooking time. I like to use these silicone inserts for less waste and easier cleanup, but you could use aluminum foil or throw the fries directly into the basket.
Air fry on 400 for 10-15 minutes, tossing every 5 minutes or so to ensure even cooking of all pieces.
Once the pieces are fully cooked and crispy, remove them from the air fryer, serve with your favorite dipping sauce, and enjoy!
These go great with my Homemade Vegan Ranch Dressing!

Variations
- Mix up the spices – Try another homemade seasoning blend like this Shawarma Spice Mix, Italian Herb Mix, or Homemade Taco Seasoning!
- Make shoestring fries – Slice these babies nice and thin for a sweet-potato twist on shoestring fries! Make sure to watch the cooking time closely.
- Make sweet potato cubes – This recipe works with any shape of sweet potato, just monitor the cooking time. Large cubes will take more time to cook.
How to Store
- Fridge: Leftover fries will keep in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
- Reheat: To keep the crispiness, reheat in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 3-5 minutes.
More Tips
- Not Vegan? Top these with chili and/or melted cheese for some delicious chili cheese fries. Or opt for a dipping sauce like traditional ranch dressing.
- Gluten-Free? These fries are naturally gluten-free!
- Oil Free? Sprinkle water on the potato slices before coating them with salt and pepper.
FAQ
They’ll cook just fine! Watch closely for burning. The fries may get slightly crispier with the peel on.
Make sure not to overcook or set the temp too high. Shake the basket often during cooking so as not to over expose any of the sides of the fries.
It is possible the basket was overcrowded or the fries were cut too thick. Every air fryer is different. Experiment with yours to find the perfect temps, timings, and amount for your basket.
